A popular myth and deception for many believers is the idea you can “do stuff” to get closer to God. When you buy into this concept, you are in denial of the truth that as a believer God is in you.
Nothing you can do will get you closer to God or cause Him to come closer to you.
You can’t get any closer to God than when He makes His home in you.
The issue isn’t getting closer to God. It is becoming aware and conscious of His abiding presence in you. The minute you think you have to “do something” to get closer to God, you have decided He has distanced Himself from you for whatever reason. You have bought into the myth that you must make things “right” to bring Him closer to you again or so you can draw closer to Him. This view goes against everything Jesus taught about His Father and denies His promise that “He will never leave or forsake us.”
God didn’t leave or separate Himself from you. Paul fought this type of myth and false belief as well. That’s why he wrote the following to the church at Rome:
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.’ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:35-39)
Nothing can separate you from God and the love He has for you. If you choose to believe this undeniable truth about God’s love for you, then those negative feelings about you or God being apart will vanish. Your heart will be renewed by His presence that has never left you.
